Top Ten Tuesday - Feb. 4, 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme from The Broke and the Bookish in which they post a book-related top ten every - you guessed it! - Tuesday.

This week the theme is Top Ten Books That Make You Cry. This one was problematic for me.

Well, I don't know that I have a top ten - frankly, I try to avoid books that I know will make me cry because I don't really enjoy crying. And I cry at a lot - good writing and any kind of abuse, neglect, character death, truly broken hearts or hurtful words.... I'm a mess.

Anyways, when it came time to think of books that had made me cry even recently, I had a hard time coming up with the goods. I did the best I could, here's a list of books that have made *me* cry:

1. Deeper by Robin York. I read and reviewed this book recently (which is why I can remember crying while reading it!), and the first chapter or so made me tear up. I've read other reviews saying that people found it hard to get into the book, or that it was too angsty for them, but I thought the central issue - revenge porn - and the turmoil it put Caroline through was heartbreaking.

2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins- yeah, I cried at the part you'd expect a person to cry at.

3. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - okay, technically I haven't read this. But I watched the movie trailer and read a description of the book and got teary-eyed, so it makes this list :P

4. Books by Sarah Dessen - I vaguely recall crying while reading some of her books.

I think that might be all I have.... Really, my list should have been things that make me cry in books!   I'm going to go read some other lists and poach ideas!

What books make you cry?

  1. I felt emotional with The Fault In Our Stars, but didn't actually cry. It is such an emotional read though. Great list.

    1. I think it might depend on how I approach reading it - if I read it without some mental preparation, I suspect I could cry through the whole thing. But in the right mind frame, I think it could be, maybe, a little bit happy? Maybe?
