Blog Tour: Lady Bridget's Diary

Today, I'm touring a quirky historical romance called Lady Bridget's Diary. Written by Maya Rodale and published by Avon, this is the first book in a new series called Keeping Up with the Cavendishes.  I loved one of her previous novels, What a Wallflower Wants, and am thrilled to introduce you to this one!

Check out the other stops on the tour at Tasty Book Tours.

The Book

In the first hilarious entry in her brand new series, USA Today bestselling author Maya Rodale re-invents a love story we all know and cherish.

Lord Darcy is the epitome of perfect

Lord Darcy is the quintessential Englishman: wealthy, titled, impossibly proper and horrified that a pack of Americans have inherited one of England’s most respected dukedoms. But his manners, his infamous self-restraint and better judgment fly out the window when he finds himself with the maddening American girl next door.

Lady Bridget is the opposite of perfect

Lady Bridget Cavendish has grand-but thwarted-plans to become a Perfect Lady and take the haute ton by storm. In her diary, Bridget records her disastrous attempts to assimilate in London high society, her adoration of the handsome rogue next door, her loathing of the Dreadful Lord Darcy and some truly scandalous secrets that could ruin them all.

They cannot stand each other-and yet they cannot stay away

It was loathing at first sight for Lady Bridget and Lord Darcy. But their paths keep crossing...and somehow involve kissing. When Lady Bridget’s diary goes missing, both Darcy and Bridget must decide what matters most of all-a sterling reputation or a perfectly imperfect love.

Lady Bridget's Diary is February 23rd!

My Review

It's been a while since I've read Bridget Jones' Diary, and when I started reading Lady Bridget's Diary, my expectations were probably more in the vein of Pride and Prejudice rather than the modern story. What we have here is the story of an American family transplanted into England and being schooled on proper behaviour for a member of the ton. They're all resistant at first, but gradually begin to unbend a bit, presumably as they all start to fall in love. This book, of course, focuses on Bridget.

This tale was a bit more physical than I expected--and not in terms of the sexy bits, which were certainly present--but in terms of the comedy. Bridget's not the most graceful of young women. She's also pretty funny, exaggerating the stuffiness of English society or cracking jokes to cover for her awkward moments.

Lady Bridget's Diary is quite funny, and that alone is a solid reason to read it; historical romance tends to sway toward the serious side of the scale, so this book provides some welcome relief.

The swoony bits are just as swoony as you might expect. There's definitely some--I hesitate to use the word update, since we've moved backward in time--changes to the familiar story line, and that makes the familiar become new again. One significant change is that we get chapters from Darcy's perspective, and those were fantastic. I loved being inside his head, reading his resistance to Bridget due to her circumstances and so on.

The only real downside here for me was that I spent much of the early story impatiently waiting for it to get to the swoony bits. I got hooked on knowing what was coming, and that made me antsy to get there. I think that made some of the early portions of the book drag--perhaps if you're more patience, and willing to go on the journey, these sections will seem much faster!

Bottom Line

Lady Bridget's Diary is refreshingly funny! If you like historical romance, you cannot go wrong with this one!

5 stars
For fans of historical romance, sarcasm/snark/humour, Lord Darcy
