Why I picked up this book:
I'm a Lauren Layne fan.
Blurb:
When the Wrong Guy is Oh-So-Right
Will Thatcher is exactly the type of sexy playboy good girls like Brynn have always avoided. And yet there was still something about him she just couldn't resist. When Will moved across the country three years ago, Brynn vowed it was time to put him behind her. She never thought Will might have other plans . . .
Back in town, Will intends to get what he's always wanted-gorgeous, unforgettable Brynn. For years, he tormented the untouchable ice princess in a desperate bid for her attention. Now he has a new plan, and he'll do anything to rewrite their stormy past. This time, he's out to show Brynn that the imperfect man might be the best mistake of her life . . .
My Thoughts:
I've been pretty open about my love for Lauren Layne's work over the past year. She's been one of my favourite author discoveries since I started blogging. I was a little bit nervous about reading Made For You because the relationship in it - Brynn and Will - was introduced to us first in Only With You. It was pretty darn antagonistic there, and resulted in Will moving to Chicago. Three years have passed, and now Will's moved back - into the house next door to Brynn in suburbia - and nothing has changed about their relationship.
I really rooted for Brynn and Will to find each other. Brynn's so anxious and wound so tightly and I think Will has a reassuring effect on her when he's not driving her nuts. Will was less sympathetic for me. I don't know why I held him so responsible for the tone of their relationship, but I did. Poor guy.
My other problem lay in how Brynn's whole life seems to be crumbling around her in this book. Is it necessary for her to revamp from the ground up to find happiness? I found this kind of frustrating.
So I have a few big problems with this book. One is that the relationship was so volatile that it made me uncomfortable. Brynn's rocky childhood is revealed and I felt like Will still poked at those really sensitive spots. Sure, it would be lovely for her to have matured past those feelings, but it was obvious to everyone that this was not the case. I absolutely smiled whenever Will and Brynn were getting along, when the jabs were softer and rolled off their backs. But it just wasn't enough to save the book overall for me. Maybe I'm just a wuss, but I wanted to see a bit more softening between these two. Bottom line:
For fans of Lauren Layne, contemporary romance, love-hate romance
Made For You was an okay follow-up to Only With You. The constant 'pigtail-pulling' between Will and Brynn could certainly read as foreplay but for me, it was just a bit too much. I recommend it if you're a big fan of Layne's work, if you were intrigued by Will and Brynn in the first book, and if you like that kind of bickering-loving contemporary romance.
3 stars For fans of Lauren Layne, contemporary romance, love-hate romance
